Students and their teachers have been involved in a literacy initiative called D.E.A.R., or Drop Everything and Read. This is where time is set aside for students to read a text of their choice during class time. It is part of many initiatives this school had implemented to improve literacy. This is a way of promoting reading across the whole school. The idea is that at a set time every day for a week everyone stops what they are doing and reads for thirty five minutes. This is a shared experience. It gets students talking about books and reading while conveying a strong message that Gaelcholáiste Chomáin believes in reading. Students read along with the Principal and teachers. The caretaker reads and visitors to the school are offered books or magazines to look through.
After this activity students are encouraged to take their book home to continue reading. This initiative has been very successful and is looked forward to by students and teachers alike. Drop Everything and Read highlights the importance of reading in our school.
